John Masters Organics’ Bare Essentials

Posted by admin On August - 23 - 2011

With a baby on the way, I’ve been giving up a lot of things—spicy tuna rolls, merlot with dinner, single-process hair color, skinny jeans. Recently, I’ve added fragrant beauty products to the no-no list; my nose is ultra-sensitive these days. Enter John Masters Organics’ fragrance-free Bare Series. The four-piece collection includes de-scented versions of the coiffing purist’s best-sellers: The Bare Shampoo features organic extracts of chamomile, white tea, and jojoba oil to gently cleanse and fortify hair, while the Bare Detangler pairs botanicals like arnica and calendula with hyaluronic acid to seal in moisture and work out knots. I’m also loving the Bare Body Wash, a foamy cleanser composed of milk thistle, vanilla extract, plus sunflower oil, and the Bare Body Lotion, which is infused with coconut oil, sea kelp, and white tea extracts to soften rough patches (and possibly prevent stretch marks—fingers crossed!). Here’s another bonus: The aroma-free hair formulas reportedly work wonders for color-treated tresses, since certain perfume extracts can strip away oils that keep strands in top shape. I’ve made a mental note of it for when I return to my colorist’s chair in another few months.

Madame Inès de la Fressange will be the new global ambassador for L’Oréal Paris. The 53-year-old Lagerfeld muse (left, at the Chanel Spring 2011 show) and recent author of Parisian Chic will bring that “irresistible je ne sais quoi” to the brand, according to global brand president Cyril Chapuy. The Fragrance Foundation announced the semi-finalists for its Fifi Awards (a.k.a. the Oscars of eaux), which include: WOMANITY by Thierry Mugler (Women’s Luxe), Tom Ford Azure Lime (Women’s Specialty Luxe), and Halle by Halle Berry Pure Orchid (Broad Appeal). [Fragrance.org]

According to Unilever PLC research, 93 percent of women consider their armpits unattractive (no dispute there), but most deodorant companies only address the stink factor. Later this week, Dove will be launching its Ultimate Go Sleeveless line, which claims to have moisturizers that give women better-looking underarms in five days. [WSJ]

We may have officially given up straightening our hair in favor of a zero-maintenance air-dry-on-the-subway routine, but the technology out there keeps getting better and better. The Independent calls out ten of the best on the market. [Independent]

Feather Hair Extensions

Posted by admin On March - 25 - 2011

Heidi Cuthbert (Right)

Feather hair extensions are suddenly all the rage. We’re seeing them on hipsters and hippies alike, and, while it had our feathers in a bit of a ruffle at first, now we’re loving the look. We chatted with Heidi Cuthbert at The National Beauty, one of the hair stylists responsible for taking this trend local, and asked her to give us the lowdown on all these feathers.

Turns out, she got the idea while touring the music festival circuit last year with a friend. “We kept noticing these girls with little feathers woven into their hair and were just loving the look! I ended up catching up to a few of them and asking to see exactly what the feathers were and how they were attached, and it was so simple, I had to try it. Now, it’s become incredibly popular,” Cuthbert says. “I get calls all the time asking for them”.

One of the biggest perks to the trend is that you can tailor the feathers to your own sense of style… and your level of courage. Add a single strand in a neutral hue for just a touch of fun, or go crazy with as many strands as you like, in any color of the rainbow! “It’s such a great way to have color and expression without having to commit to hair color,” Cuthbert points out. It’s also quick. The most time-consuming part, we’re told, is choosing your feathers from a mind-boggling selection.
