MCMC Makes a Keeper

Posted by admin On January - 31 - 2011

Brooklyn-based perfumer Anne McClain believes every fragrance should tell a story. Since graduating with honors from the prestigious Grasse Institute of Perfumery, she’s set out to chronicle her own scent memories with her two-year-old niche fragrance line MCMC. McClain crafted Hunter, a warming blend of tobacco absolute, organic Bourbon vanilla, and balsam fir, as an homage to her outdoorsy childhood best friend. Maine, a sun- and sea-drenched mix of clary sage, French seaweed, and Bulgarian rose absolute, recalls a summer of love spent on the island of North Haven off the state’s pristine coastline. And Garden, with essential oils like red thyme, lavender, myrtle, and bitter orange, is inspired by the Ananda Harvest, an urban farmers’ collective based in upstate New York. With Valentine’s Day approaching, McClain has turned her attention to that most romantic of blooms: the rose. Kept, which she designed as an “ode to oneself,” surrounds its star, the luscious red rose, with spicier notes of black tea, clove, leather, and amber, for a scent that’s romantic, but in an unexpected way. It’s unisex, too, which makes it a great V-Day gift that you and your beloved can share.

2011 is shaping up to be a good year for catwalker Tali Lennox, the daughter of Eurythmics front woman Annie Lennox and Israeli film producer Uri Fruchtmann. The Telegraph traces her career from the Dolce Gabbana catwalk way back in Spring ‘10 to two Topshop campaigns and her latest coup, the Acne pre-fall lookbook, shot by creative director Jonny Johansson himself. Daphne Guinness was one of Alexander McQueen’s best friends, but according to British Vogue, she’s happy with the direction his successor, Sarah Burton, is taking the collection. “Sarah’s brilliant,” she told the mag. “She worked with Lee for so long so she knows what to do. She’s not Lee but I think he’d be happy with her doing it.” [Vogue U.K.]

In advance of New York fashion week, the CFDA has released its latest health initiative guidelines. They encourage everyone in the industry to encourage models with eating disorders to seek help, to provide healthy food and water at shows and shoots, and raise awareness about the dangers of smoking. Get a Winter Glow Fast, Courtesy of Tata Harper

Facials and blow-outs. They may be our two favorite beauty services and, as far as we’re concerned, should go to together like chips and dip—or studs and chains. You can book the two in succession, of course, but who has time for that? Once you’ve disrobed, been exfoliated, peeled, and rehydrated, then re-robed and blown out, we’re talking two, maybe three hours out the window. For the beauty conscious and time deprived, there’s now Tata Glow, the recently introduced express facial designed by natural skincare guru and Vermont farmer Tata Harper, available exclusively at Ric Pipino’s Nolita salon—while you get your hair did! Pipino’s Gothic space isn’t equipped with a private treatment room, so the 35-minute procedure is performed in the styling chair during coiffing—or on the black leather banquet in the waiting room. The speedy skin-renewing session includes a quick sudsing with Harper’s creamy exfoliating cleanser, followed by an herb-infused steam courtesy of heated sachets and a mineral-rich French clay mask designed to draw out impurities and get rid of dullness. While the mask works its magic, you’re treated to an aromatherapy session with either Harper’s anti-stress or anti-irritation oil (we went with the former, as getting pelted with freezing rain on our walk to Centre Street was a fairly harrying experience). A spritz of her Floral Essence spray and a slather of antiaging serum and moisturizer finish things off. One blissful hour later, we emerged with a newfound winter glow and beautifully bouncy, sleek hair. That darn blizzard definitely took the pep out of our step on the way home, but we’ll be back when the threat of yet another apocalyptic winter storm has subsided. Maybe in March?

Tata Glow, $85 exclusively at Pipino Nolita, 3 Centre Market Place, NYC, (212) 871-5533.
